Date:  Early 1950’s

Maker:  Made in Denmark by France & Daverkosen

Design: #518

This two-tiered solid teak and cane side table was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for France & Daverkosen imported by John Stuart Inc.  Its design features a pair of trapezoid shaped tiers; the top is solid teak and the bottom shelf showcases the original caning with a teak frame.  It is supported on tapered, cylindrical legs.  All 10 pieces do come apart for easy transport.

This end table, true to John Stuart’s tagline of “Exceptional Furniture,” really does have the most extraordinary red color to the teak wood (it has deepened with age) and has glorious flaming details on the top tier.

This particular piece was produced by France & Daverkosen for the John Stuart Inc. furniture showroom in Grand Rapids.  It is end table #518 as noted to the verso along with both the “John Stuart Grand Rapids” circular tag and the FD imprint for France & Daverkosen.  This table is circa early 1950’s because France & Daverkosen later became France & Son in 1957 and the stamp changed after that. The John Stuart showroom was only open from 1948 to 1956.

Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were both Danish architect-designers.  In 1944, the pair co-established Hvidt & Mølgaard Studio, which they ran together until 1975.  During this time, the pair created designs for Fritz Hansen, France & Søn, and Søborg Møbelfabrik.  The company was a pioneering force in Danish furniture design.  Both Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen designed over 256 pieces of furniture together over the course of their careers.

Very Good – This piece is in normal vintage condition with minor wear that is consistent with age and use.  The table is sturdy and in excellent structural condition. The top does have some light blemishes, though it gives character to this 50+ year old piece. The caned shelf is original and in excellent condition.

24" L x 20 ¾" W x 22 ¾ H

The table tapers from a width of 20 ¾ to approx. 15". Height of the caned shelf is 15"
