The linoleum cuts of Pablo Picasso reveal the graphic genius of this undisputed giant among twentieth-century artists. Between 1939 and 1968, Picasso explored such themes as bullfights, bacchanalia, still lifes, female heads, and figure studies in a medium that he helped to revolutionize. His invention in 1959 of the one-block technique of linocut printing enabled him to achieve brilliantly colored and richly textured works on paper.

This color linoleum cut print of  Woman at the Window designed by Pablo Picasso (Spain/France, 1881 – 1973), was printed in the first edition of Pablo Picasso Linoleum Cuts: Bacchanals, Women, Bulls & Bullfighters, published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. in 1962.

Picasso started making linoleum cuts during the late 1950's and the originals were issued by Galerie Louise Leiris in signed editions of 50.  In 1962 Picasso and the Louise Leiris Gallery cooperated with the production of a facsimile edition of the linocuts, meticulously recreated in reduced size. The printing was done in West Germany, with a French edition published by Editions Cercle D'Art and an American edition published by Harry Abrams, both in 1962.  This impression from the sought-after 1962 edition (published by Abrams) was done on heavy wove paper with a richly textured printed surface.

Produced late in Picasso’s career, this colorful abstract image is rendered in black line with brown and lighter tan tones to create shadow and highlights, and portrays a woman, waking from slumber, sitting up in bed, and opening the window curtains to let in the morning sun. The image is printed on heavy stock and is matted and presented under glass in a wooden frame.  Research indicates this may be from plate #22.
